Transformation of unused public space into social meeting place and playground

Intercultural en interdisciplinary art festival. Working, living, and exchanging experiences with local artists in the inner city of  of Johannesburg. The absence of playgrounds motivated us to install 30 swings made from recovered car tires on the façade arches of an old unused movie theatre.

After cleaning the location we installed lights to make the place less attractive for criminal activity and drug abusers. Then the immediate success of the installations for children was more than expected and it brought many parents and their children to the streets and to claim this place. Exactly how we wanted.
